How to introduce a new cat to our two cats?

We currently own two cats; a 2 year-old male and a god-knows-how-old female (she wandered into our house one day so we just adopted her). Both have been sterilized, and though they occasionally exchange a couple punches, they’re not really aggressive and instead mostly keep to themselves.

Recently we’ve been thinking of adopting a third cat, a 1 year old female who was picked up and spayed by rescuers and has been living in a shelter for almost 7 months. I was ready to call the shelter and ask about her, but my sister pointed out that maybe two adult females wouldn’t get along. I pointed out that since they’re both sterilized hormones wouldn’t be a problem; but I’m more worried about introducing them correctly. We’ve never had to introduce cats to each other before since our two cats are mother and son.

How does one go about introducing them properly, and what should I consider before getting a third cat?
