My 5 month old kitten has separation anxiety

I know this is a very common topic to post about but I still want some advice for my specific situation. I have a kitten that is now 5 months older and she has been with me since she was just under two months old. I know that I adopted her a bit younger than recommended which is probably part of the issue.

The main problem is that I work on a very sporadic schedule as I’m an ind contractor and when I do work it’s at 12hr shifts. So I’m gone for 13-14hrs taking in commute time. Sometimes I have to work more overtime though so maybe even 15hrs on the rare occasion. She’s so young though that it stresses me out to leave her alone for that long.

If I’m gone for more than an hour she gets very upset. When She was younger she would cry even when I just went outside to smoke. Which she just waits by the door now but will still cry occasionally if she hears me outside. I can’t let her outside either because I live in nyc and don’t have a backyard or anything. My apartment isn’t super small but it is only a two bed with no living room.

I have two roommates who are fine with watching her while I’m at work but they are often gone for months at a time when they work and they also shouldn’t have to worry about leaving her alone as she’s my cat. I was thinking about adopting a second cat but at the moment it’s not possible for at least a few months.

For now I’ve been bringing her to my grandma when I have to work multiple days in a row so she can be fed on time and have someone with her. My grandma lives an hour away though and it’s stressful for me to bring her there every time I have to work.

Even when I play with her a lot before I leave she still is really upset when I go but is there anything else that I can do to help her in the meantime? I have to discuss with my roommates before I can even think about adopting a second cat. I can’t really buy a high maintenance pet or even a dog because of my work hours too. Does anyone have recommendations on interactive toys or even if a fish or two would help? I don’t think I’d be upset if she ends up accidentally killing it, which I know is kind of cruel but yeah. Anything that would help her be less lonely and bored when I’m away.
