Hello, there are reasons i have to take care for an alexandrene parakeet i think is the name, dont wanna go to much into detail why, that is just the situation now, but i have quite a few problems doing that.
He lives in quite a big cage, i can pretty much fit in myself, i try not to bother him, and i try to move carefully so that he doesnt get afraid, but he fears me like i am the devil.
Changing his food and water is not that much of a problem, i can do that when he is on the lower part of the cage, but i also need to clean the cage, and i want to let him free every day, but right now i fear that this is not possible. Once out i fear i will never get him back into the cage.
Also about his nutrition, i read he needs the sand for digestion. So i put some of that sand on the ground, i cant make the cage full of that sand, because the floors are "open" to all sides, everything would just fall off to the sides.
Then there is his personal hygiene, i put a metal bowl with water into the cage so he can take a bath when he wants to, so far i didnt see him doing that.
For context: the owner (who absolutely loves him and took good care for him) had to leave on very short notice and cant be contacted and couldnt show me anything before, the bird was in an animal shelter for two weeks, and now he lives with me. I never had a pet, but i am willing to do everything so that the little guy is happy.
I found lots of online resources, but they are very "matter of fact" so to say, they say that he needs this or that, but i dont find how to say it ... like practical advice that goes a bit more into detail, and i cant find video tutorials that show me how to do things.
He is very alive, he eats, and as far as i can tell he drinks, he is climbing around a lot, and he bites into all the wooden things that are part of his home. So at least he is able to survive with the care i am giving him. But i also want him to be happy and feel at least that i am in no way there to harm him. I mean for me it is ok if he doesnt want to eat out of my hand and all the sweet things people getting pets usually want, i mean iwant that too, but first priority is not me having fun, but him being happy.
I feel the most important thing right now is that i can let him roam free at least in one room, and get him back into the cage if i have to leave or when it is tim to sleep.
Please help, and really i cant really change the situation or contact the owner, and the animal shelter is a big nono.
