new cat is so sweet to me, but so mean to my dog

i recently adopted a new kitty (about 1 yr old) and he has been super sweet! he's never once scratched or bit me except for little love bites when i'm petting him. before him, i've had my 4 yr old havanese/mini-schnauzer mix, who is so gentle he wouldn't even hurt a bug (literally. anytime we get bugs in the house he lays next to them observing and gently pawing them).

when my cat first came home i gave him his own room (the bathroom) and kept them separated but gradually introduces scents and allowing them to view each other through a doggie gate i had. eventually it got to the point where my cat was comfortable enough to want to explore my 1 bed apartment, and now he's free roam. i knew it would take some more time to get adjusted to my dog, but it only seems like their relationship is getting worse.

when i'm physically holding my dog near my cat, my cat is fine and doesn't seem to care, even purring just because he's next to me (my dog is in my lap). but when my dog walks any where near my cat on his own, he hisses and pounces at him. i thought they would eventually get used to one another but today and yesterday, my cat has scratched my dog to the point where my dog is bleeding and super scared of my kitty.

i really don't want to return my cat back, but i don't know what else to do... any advice? will they ever get along? or at least be peaceful?
