Hi there.
For some time now, I've been thinking about having a pet at home. I've had some during my childhood, but never bothered again due to it being somewaht impractical and expensive, and me not liking the idea of them feeling "caged", which might be the case with a large animal in a small apartment. However, I do really like animals, and as time goes on, I feel like I want a pet more and more.
I'm trying to think of the best options. I'll give you some keypoints:
- The animal must be able to be potty trained or develop some sort of predictable excretion schedule.
- I live in a small flat, which includes a tiny balcony that is always open in the summer, and I want the pet to be able to roam freely around the house once it's trained.
- It needs to be able
- Must be ok with being alone 8-10 hours a day.
- Every year I go on two ~2 weeks holiday.
- Ideally, not too expensive to sustain.
- Bonus points for bonding potential, but I can settle with him simply being comfortable around me.
- I don't mind having two so it won't feel lonely, as long as they can be safely neutered.
- We can accomodate an area of the house to the pets needs.
- We live in a warm and sunny Mediterranean climate.
I like rodents, so I've been thinking of maybe rabbits or field mice, but I'm open to other small mammals (hedgehogs, etc), and amphibians or reptiles like tortoises (not snakes, because my wife doesn't like them, unfortunately).
By the way, it's just the two of us at home, and we don't plan on having kids. We might have more pets in the future, if all goes well, so it would be cool if the chosen pet is compatible with others also roaming around the house (idk how a rabbit gets along with a turtle, for example)... but thats just a bonus point thinking into the long term, not really something important or dealbreaking.
Thanks in advance for whatever advice you can provide.
