I need help with how to address something to my parents. I would like to politely ask them if they would be willing to keep a cat which I (21f) adopted, in the event that I should move interstate next year. She is 1 y/o, & lives here with us; my parents are very fond of her & cats in general (we’ve had 3 others as a family) but I adopted this one in my name, so it feels like something I’ll have to get their approval for.
Backstory: I adopted this lovely cat about a year ago during a difficult time personally when I wasn’t at all sure of my future. I’m in my early 20s in University and living with my parents. I thought that my career plans would keep me in this city for at least 5 years (or more) making it a good decision to adopt, but recent developments have opened up a possible move to another state or country, a job that would involve leaving for weeks at a time, among other things that make a cat more difficult. I know cat boarding is a thing while I’m away for work, but I didn’t anticipate paying for up to 8-10 weeks of it a year (which would be the case), and my kitty having to be all alone with no family all that time.
I’m willing to continually send them $$ for all expenses and of course I understand that I’ve made a mistake and feel terrible. I am truly the biggest cat person but I didn’t give it the thought required. I just need help addressing this with my parents in a way that doesn’t sound entitled/won’t make them think too badly of me. I am really hoping they’ll be ok with the idea.
