Question about dog getting older.

So not sure if this is the right subreddit or not, but I figured I'd ask here for some advice.

I have an eight year old German Shepard, and he is really starting to show his age. He has been grumpy lately, and his hip pain has been bugging him pretty bad. He's doesn't have cartilage there and vets say they really can't do anything.

Now he is an amazing pup, normally super friendly but has been starting to get aggressive with the little ones. He's bit my 2 year old's face twice now and she wasn't doing anything other than sitting next to him.

He's been grumpy and noisy before, but has never actually gotten violent until recently. Thankfully it wasn't serious but she did have a little mark.

My wife is talking about putting him down, and I just can't agree to that. I know he's getting older but he still has a lot of youth in him. I was very upset about the interaction, however he is still my boy and I love the dog to death.

The reason I'm posting is because I'm trying to figure out if there are other options that anyone knows of? He's not aggressive towards adults or anything, and he's great with other dogs too. I know we can really get him adopted at this point in his life, but I'm trying to figure out a way where he can be happy and comfortable without us having to keep our eyes on him all the time with the kiddos. Preferably a place where I can come visit him and let him know I'm still there for him. He is truly party of our family and it breaks my heart, but I can't let something like that with my children happen again.

We are located in Southern California if that helps.
