Scared about giving cat subcutaneous fluids

Very recently my 14 year old cat was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease. In addition to the diet change (which is its own pain since we have another cat) we’ve also been told to give her SubQ fluids 3x per week at 30ml per dose. I understand that that is a pretty small amount compared to most so I’m lucky in that sense for now.

Ever since they told us that we’d be giving fluids at home I’ve been sick about it. Tonight we finally tried it for the first time and it went about as horribly as I had feared. We initially got the needle in but before we could even unclamp the fluid bag she started hissing, scrambled out of our grasp, and bolted which yanked the line out in the process. We changed the needle out and tried again a short time later when she was slightly more relaxed on the couch. The needle went in and she started hissing and growling again. I flipped the clamp switch and when I did she really started losing it. We had it going for about 5-10 seconds before she started going into attack mode on her side and then bolted again while yanking the needle out. We called it a night at that point.

It was very distressing for me especially since I’m a helicopter cat dad, always wanting her to be as comfortable and happy as possible. In this case it was difficult to tell if we even really got any fluids in her. I know this is what is best for her and I’ll do anything for her health, but the thought of doing this every other night is bringing on some bad anxiety. We’ll keep trying no matter what, I just hope it gets better somehow. Sticking my cat with needles while she hisses at me is not how I want our relationship to continue. We’ll try a different holding technique next time to make her more secure, but any other tips or words of encouragement would be much appreciated. Thank you all.
