Trouble handling cat’s paws for nail trim

I’m a first time cat owner who adopted last October. I had the vet trim my cat’s claws mid-December and have been frantically trying to figure out how to do it myself since then. Now it’s been almost two months and her claws are getting pretty long, occasionally getting caught on things etc. I’ve had trouble getting the cat to let me handle her paws, she’s very opposed to having them touched even when consistently rewarded with treats. I’ve tried to do it really gradually but she doesn’t seem to be getting any more comfortable. I’ve also tried doing it while she’s sleepy and it wakes her right up lol. I feel horribly guilty about how little progress I’ve made and am constantly worried she’ll injure herself because I wasn’t able to figure this basic thing out quickly enough. I’m about to schedule another vet visit to get her nails clipped to at least buy myself more time to figure this out.

My main question is probably kind of stupid - occasionally I’ll get a hold of her paw for a few seconds and try gently squeezing the pad at various points, but I just can’t get the claws to come out!! Does anyone else have trouble with this/any pointers on how to get them to come out? I’m not sure if she’s somehow resisting or what.

Aside from that, any pointers on getting a cat more comfortable with having their paws handled would be appreciated. I don’t have a second person to assist. I’ve been taking kind of a wussy approach since last time I tried to burrito her she looked really scared and peed herself and I’d rather this not be a traumatic thing if possible.
