Hello, friends and fellow cat lovers!
So, I have this cat. We have an undeniable bond. I adopted him from a cat cafe when he was about 15 months old. He had been injured in what was assumed a fight with another animal and rescued off the streets by a very sweet lady who paid for his surgery and medical expenses.
I have had him for a year as of next month (March 2021). He’s a happy indoor kitty who has clearly warmed up to me over the years. For instance, he wouldn’t let me hold him when I first got him, but now I can cradle him like a baby.
It turns out, that I may be leaving to serve a religious mission for a period of 2 years. I will be leaving in a couple of months (July at the latest).
My question is, will he be sad? Will he remember me when I get back? I have a good friend who LOVES him and will take good care of him while I’m away. But when I get back, will he want to be my cat again? Will he remember me? Or will our bond be ruined forever?

(Also, if anyone with advanced cat knowledge can explain their reasoning it would be much appreciated!)
