Adopted a new cat, how do I make her tolerate the dog?

I set my expectations low just in case. I just hope they just at least tolerate each other.

My cat is a female 2 year told tortie. I just adopted her yesterday. As soon as she came out of the carrier, she waltzed out and begged us for pets! She went around exploring and she seemed social and nice. We thought maybe this would be good idea to bring the dog.

My partner had his 4 year old, excited, semi hyper lab/poodle/collie leashed. As soon as they slowly met face to face, she arched her back, hissed and her pupils were dilated. She ran away to the stairs window and sat there.

The dog was kept leashed for awhile, and we couldn’t really let him go. She peaked out of the side of the wall down the hallway and the dog saw her from down the hallway and growled and barked at her. She ran away.

My partner took the dog back to his house, but I’m wondering, how could we make them more comfortable and what items should I get? I was thinking of getting a huge cat tree so she has somewhere to sit thats high enough where the dog, who’s 85 pounds , won’t get her. Should I get a gate? The dog is very friendly and nice otherwise and is very social, I think it’s because the cat is small ( 8 pounds) and he doesn’t know her.

How long should I keep her away from the dog? Should my partner keep his dog at his place till we’re all ready? Or should we get the condo right away so they are forced to at least coexist.

The dog is always here and so is my partner, and I don’t want to have my partner come here and not bring his dog. I just want us to be one happy family! I also have a second floor that’s away from the first floor obviously where I can keep the cat tree. What do you think?
