Elbow Dysplasia-Hard time coping

Our beautiful active 9 month Golden Retriever Puppy was just diagnosed with elbow dysplasia. We'll get the results of the CT scan tomorrow, but I'm having a really hard time today coping that he's never going to be a pup that is going to run or play hard with other dogs which he LOVES to do.

It just seems incredibly unfair that it's a genetic component and that he's going to have to make incredible adjustments to his life and limit what is going to be "normal" for him and I just feel so sad for him. We're going to do everything we can to make his life somewhat normal, but it just seems so overwhelming and the fear of the unknown is just really hard right now.

I'd love to hear some success stories from other dogs with pups who had elbow dysplasia and went on to live a happy life. We're getting him signed up for dog rehab including an underwater treadmill and plan on swimming him early and often (we live in CO so it's kind of hard to find open water for him to swim often in). It just seems like one of those situations where the hurt won't ever go away
