found two dying mice on my doorstep two days in a row--no seeming injury--how to help?

there is a dying, what appears to be a baby, mouse on my front porch. this is the second day in a row a dying mouse has appeared, but yesterday it was bigger. the baby mouse has been in "my care" since last night--I put a rag over him as a blanket, set something a mouse could eat out, and put a small dish of water and some cardboard he could chew on or lay under.

i figured i was just helping him pass in comfort, but i checked this morning and he'd appeared to have drug himself to underneath the cardboard. i placed the rag over him as a blanket to keep him warm, and laid the cardboard over him as a shelter.

i'm surprised he survived the night, and he seems in rough condition--he also keeps opening and closing his mouth and I'm not sure why. i tried to put water into his mouth with a teaspoon, but he wouldn't take, so i've just left him again to lay under the makeshift shelter.

why is he closing and opening his mouth?

why do half-dead mice keep appearing perfectly on my doorstep (we have cats, but they typically bring animals fully dead)? i

s there anyway i can make this little guy's passing easier?
