Four cats developed acne

So I have four male cats, and regularly have foster cats. A couple of months ago all the cats passed around a cold of some sort. A couple were taken to the vet and got a steroid shot and some meds. All colds cleared up. I noticed soon after that two of the cats had cat acne, one worse than the other. It didn’t clear up after a week or so, so he went to the vet and got some steroid ointment. It helped for sure but a couple weeks ago I took him back as it was still quite bad. Like open sores, legit zits popping bad. I got an antibacterial wash and more ointment. Daily scrub (gently) and ointment for the last week for him and his brother’s (no open sores, but lots of blackheads).

My assumption was that the colds they developed brought the cat acne on, but I then noticed today that the other two cats also have acne, but very mild. I’ve now changed all food and water bowls to stainless steel (were glass before) and took away the water fountain. No food had been changed for years, and I really don’t want to take that route as I use a urinary health food since my one cat developed a bladder blockage.

I’m very surprised that all cats have acne and wondering if anyone has experienced this. I’m hoping the water fountain is the culprit, but any advice on other precautions to take or helpful products would be amazing. The steroid ointment helps but it’s expensive and I think mostly just helps the swelling and such for the one cat.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
