How to stop cat from opening a door with a defective doorknob

One of my cats is extremely curious and will try to get into anything. We live in an old apartment building so some things are a bit janky. The wood in the door frames warp throughout the year so it causes the doors to not work completely sometimes, and in this case it’s our bathroom door. When we pull the knob shut, it leaves the door ajar a little so my cat has figured out that he can lean on it to open it. I really don’t want him in there because it’s one of the two places in my apartment where I can store things that I don’t want him playing with and he has been capable of destruction in the past (example: he once pushed my bf’s guitar amp off the table which left a dent in the floor). Is there any way we can keep the door shut? I would ask maintenance to fix it but since it’s the door frame that’s the problem, I don’t know if it can even be fixed apart from rebuilding the frame...right now we have tied a rubber band around the knob and a mounting hook (we also put a big piece of duct tape on the rubber band to prevent our cats from swallowing it in case it snaps) but it would be annoying to deal with this long-term. Would child proof locks work in this case? I realize this is a pretty specific situation but if anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it.
