I really need some advice for my cat that's growing fat.

Hi People of Reddit,

We got our sweet Russian Blue boy less than a year ago (he's roughly 8 months now). He's doing great, the family treats him like an actual human child and I think he's happy, the only problem is he likes food a LOT. After he was neutered at six months his appetite gradually increased while his energy decreased. I noticed him getting a little bulkier and so took him to the vet who said he is overweight. Ok... so she said we had to slowly give him less food which led me to decrease his food intake by intervals of 5g every couple of days. I was so guilty that I fed him too much, especially because I felt I was doing the right thing feeding him organic premium quality food.

It's been over two weeks and he's at 70g of kibble now but not without great trouble (and supposed to be lower than that still). I'm worrying because he literally hasn't lost a gram of weight but I also don't want him to starve because I assume he's still growing. He's becoming very tense about food and cries many times a day that he's hungry, sometimes even steals our dog's food. He was so happy to receive his wet food in the morning, which the vet said to cut out entirely. I feel sad that I am making him food-obsessed when he is genuinely such a sweet cat.

He's my first cat so I really need some advice from anyone who knows something about this or is experienced so we can stop worrying. What is the best food for sterilised cats - perhaps something that he can eat more of and gain less weight from (???) I looked up Hills science diet but my boyfriend heard mixed reviews. How many times a day shall I feed him, 3x or 2x? How much is he still going to grow and is it normal that he hasn't lost any weight after two weeks? How can I stop him crying? Can I still give him treats?

Sorry if I sound like a crazy cat-obsessed person. I would be grateful for any help.
