hi all! so i’ll start off by giving the background of the situation - my boyfriend and i adopted a 1 year old kitty who we named barbara. she is wonderful and i love her to pieces, however her foster mom said that after a bit she got ‘territorial’ with her other cat in the house.
no big deal as boyfriend and i don’t have another cat - but lately she’s seemed to be really angry with me. we are in a townhouse, so i go up and down the steps a lot, but she’s actively trying to attack me lately.
she definitely prefers my boyfriend over me, he’s her favorite - but she used to at least seem like she liked me.
the two of us will go away for a weekend and get a cat-sitter to make sure she has clean water and food, but she always seemed like she was happy (or at least ok) with me being around.
she has always ‘attacked’ your legs if you are going up and down the stairs too much for her liking, but i have to in order to get laundry done, clean, and that kind of thing.
boyfriend and i went to spend a few days with my parents, and he came back around 5 days before me and said how cuddly barbara was with him.
when i got back she was indifferent, which isn’t a huge deal, but nearly any time i walk around the house she attacks me - it’s different from the usual “kitty hugs” which she’d do around my legs going up and down the steps - but her body language toward me is so much different in the last few days to the point my left arm is all scratched up and has bite marks from her being a little crazy.
the boyfriend thinks i’m making it all up because barbara is super affectionate with him, and she only seems to be a crazy kitty when he’s not paying attention?
i think barbara knows when he is and isn’t paying attention, because the ‘attacks’ happen when he’s doing something else or it’s just me in the house.
i love this little kitty so much and have no plans on getting rid of her no matter how much of a jerk she can be, but is there any advice or any words of wisdom i can be given? i just want to walk up and down the steps without worrying my leg is going to be cromched or that i’ve done something to make her mad!
google has been next to no help with this - probably my fault for not knowing what to put in - so that’s why i’m reaching out to reddit!
