I rescued a 14-month-old cat from a shelter a little over a week ago. I have a 13-year-old golden retriever at home, too.
From the get-go, the cat has been very scared of the dog, hissing and scratching at the kennel we brought her home in before we even set her down.
I kept the cat in the bathroom for the first 2-3 days, then got a gate for the apartment so she could roam freely with the dog confined to one half of the space.
Despite her always hissing when the dog got close to her, she never attacked. I've even been leaving them home alone unattended! I would come home and they'd be waking up from naps on opposite sides of the apartment. Nice.
But today was different. Earlier, the dog followed me to the door to let in a delivery, and the cat went crazy -- scratching persistently and not stopping! I didn't know how to get her off the dog, so I had to pull the dog to safety. Later on, the two made eye contact while the cat was using her litter box and the same thing happened. She bolted toward the dog, hissing and all. But this time I kicked the cat and she turned around and ran back to her side of the apartment.
What the hell is going on here? What steps do you guys suggest I take to ensure a safe household for my dog? My apartment is one large space, so I can't keep either animal behind a closed door, except the bathroom.
What's the best way to discipline the cat when she does things like this? Better yet, how do I get the dang cat used to the dog so I don't need to discipline her at all!?
