Senior dog has a heart murmur

Hello! I'm sorry if this isn't the place to post this, I am looking for stories of owners who's dogs have had heart murmurs/heart disease and have lived long happy lives after their diagnosis.

I took my dog to the vet earlier today for some unrelated issues and while giving him his exam she noticed he had a heart murmur. After chest xrays the radiologist says things look "on the larger end of normal", and the vet wants me to check in with a cardiologist in ~6 months.

To be honest I've been totally anxious about this all day. My boy is turning 12 in June (chihuahua likely mixed, so he is old but not too old for his breed), and he's my first dog ever (had him since he was a puppy, my childhood dog). I'm terrified things will suddenly get worse. The vet said it was only a stage 2 murmur, but kept emphasizing this wasn't always a good reflection on the severity of his condition. In general he is still behaving normally, active with a healthy appetite and still excited to play.

Sorry again if this is the wrong place for this, I just need some support from people who will understand how I'm feeling right now 😥
