Splitting up kitten siblings?

Hi everyone,

Someone I know found a litter of 5 kittens under his house back in January. He was able to rescue 3 of them and the mother left. Of the 3 he rescued, 2 in particular have been very close. They play together, cuddle together, and are always together in the house. They are currently roughly 18 weeks old.

I brought one of the kittens home with me and it’s only been about 4 days, but it’s been very difficult to pet him and he often hides from me. He cried a lot the first night he was with me but he doesn’t cry as much now. I play with him a lot during the day but he still is pretty skittish and hesitant. However, there has been some progress in that he feels more comfortable coming out to eat (I had been feeding him under the bed where he was hiding for the first 2 days) and he isn’t hissing at me.

I’ve been in regular contact with the person who rescued the kittens to see how the two do apart, and he says that the kitten’s sister hasn’t really stopped crying since we separated them 4 days ago. He says she calls out for him a lot. He is also a bit older and not able to play with the kitten as frequently, so I am afraid she is missing having someone to play with.

Should we reunite the kittens? Should we see how the next few days go? I’m afraid that separating them will affect their development and will continue to depress them, but on the other hand they’re still fairly young. I’m really torn up about it and not sure what to do. Taking the kitten I have back is an option if necessary.
