Hi there. I've had two kittens since they were 8 weeks old, both spayed as soon as they were able. They were a so-called bonded pair, and they did most everything together. They ate together, slept together, groomed one another, played together, went outside together, etc etc. In February, one of them went outside and never came back.. and after about two weeks we figured something had gotten her and there was little chance of getting her back - if any chance at all.. until today.
This morning, I woke up to a text from a vet clinic about 30 minutes from me that someone had brought in a kitten for a wellness exam and scanned my cat for a microchip, at which point they contacted me and let me know my cat was alive and well. I was able to get in touch with the lady who had taken her in about a month ago and we picked her up in the afternoon.
But bringing her home was not a great reuniting. Immediately our other cat started to hiss and growl at her, staring at her with some of the biggest pupils I've ever seen. The one we brought home has shown no signs of aggression (she is quite a submissive cat). I understand she smells different, and this is part of what puts her off along with the fact it had been two months that our one cat had gotten to be alone with everything and everyone to herself so I'm sure she feels like that is threatened.
I'm very sad to see all of this, and I'm sure it will just take time for everything to feel alright again - but is there any possibility that the cat who has been here the whole time may never adjust to having her back? Could it be that she needs to be the only cat, despite them being completely fine before the other one wandered off and got lost?
And please, please - any advice anyone has for how to make this transition go as smoothly as possible let me know. I hate for there to be so much tension, though I understand that to them it is no small feat to adjust to something like this. It just feels so bad knowing how they were before, and all that our one kitty who just got home must have been through when she was gone.
