He loves his cat but he has neglected it for years, I told him not to get one because I knew he’d neglect it but he did anyways. Cleans it’s litter box once every month which is absolutely disgusting, we can literally get diseases. Cat developed a terrible, wet cough and started going into long coughing fits >10 times a day after he had it for a few months, so I’m almost positive it’s from the dirty litter and ammonia.
I probably have a “talk” with him probably once a week regarding how he absolutely needs to clean it atleast once every few days, and that this is fucking disgusting abuse and I am going to move out if he doesn’t fix it. He just doesn’t listen. I’ve seriously had this talk with him 200 fucking times. He doesn’t care at all, says he’ll start cleaning it and doesn’t.
I tell him if he’s not responsible enough to take care of it then he needs to take it back to the shelter because they will actually care for the poor thing. He interprets this as “you hate my cat and just want it gone” and doesn’t listen.
What are my options here? I’m probably going to move out but I feel so bad for the cat and the conditions it’s living in. Should I go to the shelter he adopted it from, show them pictures of its litter box, and explain the coughing situation? Can they even do anything?
