New people moved into the house next door to us about a month ago. They have 2 dogs that have gotten loose several times. I went and knocked on their door a couple a weeks ago just to introduce myself, let them know their dogs got out and to offer any assistance we could with the dogs. I could see a young woman in the front room as the blinds were open, but she never came to the door.
They were out again yesterday and my wife called animal control for assistance. AC came out and the ACO and my wife were able to get the dogs and put them back in their back yard. Very friendly dogs, looks like maybe a 1 year old Shepard and maybe a 1 year old Aussie. My wife gave them a bowl of water and some treats. They were fairly well behaved and nicely took the treats. The ACO scanned them and they are not chipped, but they do have collars and tags w/ph #'s. It was obvious they were underfed borderline malnourished. The ACO pondered whether to take them or put them back in the owner's backyard, opting for the latter. Told my wife he would be contacting the owners.
Having a soft spot for animals and knowing they must be starving, yesterday evening we gave each one of them about a cup of our dog's food thru the broken fence. It was painfully obvious they hadn't eaten in a while. I put a note on the door with our names, phone #'s and address. Note is still there. We can see when they pull up and they haven't been home for several days. We again fed them about a cup of food each at different parts of the fence as the Shepard gets aggressive and starts fighting the other dog. So we will not be giving them any more food, which breaks our hearts.
Oddly enough, the ACO didn't leave a note or card on their door yesterday, even after saying this is the 3rd call this week on the dogs.
We have a dog so we can't really take them. We don't know what else we can do. We are really hoping the homeowners will call us or come knock on our door. We will gladly feed them if the owners are out of town or away. We just hate knowing the dogs are left in the backyard for days without food. There is a hose in the backyard that slowly drips/leaps but we don't know if it's enough for the dogs to actually get drinks of water.
This situation is really heavy on our hearts and minds. We won't feed them again due to the 1 dog attacking the other. Just don't know what else to do other than contact Animal Control again if the owners don't show up by tomorrow?
