There’s a chance our puppy may be from a puppy mill. What next?

Or a “backyard breeder”. So we wanted a dog, I suggested we look around at shelters. We looked around at a few and each one, quite literally had all older pit bulls. Unfortunately we cannot give a pit bull the care it provides. My husband da also really expressed he wanted a puppy. So we looked on Craigslist around our area, nothing that would fit our living situation, or the puppies were too far. Long story short we found Keystone Puppies, I thought I researched the site enough but in hindsight I guess I didn’t. We went to go pick up our puppy. We got there and they were...Amish? Mennonites? They were on a huge farm out in the middle of nowhere in Lancaster PA, They brought us into their home, showed us the puppy with his brother, and eventually he had us sign a contract saying that he would cover the cost of the vet bill up to the cost of the puppy if he had a genetic disease up to his 1 year birthday (he’s 4 months old) and he gave us his vaccinations and a bill of good physical health by a local vet. We gave him the money and hightailed it out of there because to be honest, the whole thing was just really strange. We soon realized we didn’t ask to see the parents and that was a mistake. We didn’t see where he was born or anything. When we got there he and the other puppy were hiding under a couch which was weird to my husband.

He’s been good and we are crazy about him. We knew he was a Lhasa Apso mix, so we called the man back to ask what he was mixed with and called us back and said he was a Lhasa Apso-Bichon mix. Okay, great.

We kept taking about the fact that they were Amish and how we’ve never been in an Amish home before. So I was looking stuff up about their culture and we started watching a video. Then the video mentioned something about puppy mills and we then proceeded to research the website, the guys name, and Amish puppy mills in Lancaster. We did find that the same man sells puppies on Greensfieldpuppies.com which is most definitely a broker for Amish puppy mills. From all the research we did we’ve surmised that he is most definitely a puppy mill puppy, or a backyard breeding puppy. Of course there’s a chance that he isn’t, but I think it’s safe to say that’s unlikely. We feel really dumb, to say the least.

Does anyone have experience with this? We obviously want to get him thoroughly checked for any genetic diseases or health issues that could pop up in the future as we have nothing to go on. Does anyone know what we should ask the vet for? We just want to make sure that he is healthy and that he has everything he needs.
