When I lived in upstate ny, in the winter whenever my cat would catch a mouse or other critter outside he'd let it freeze overnight. And then go outside in the morning and eat it, rather than eating it right away. For some reason, during the winter he preferred saving them for later as opposed to right away.
And he seemed quite organized about it in a sense. He had certain spots picked out, and I don't think he ever forgot where he put one or anything. If it was a bit above freezing during the day in the fall or spring, he'd seem to have an amazingly good sense of when it would get cold enough overnight or not.
I never understood what the whole purpose of freezing it was though? There seemed to be quite a bit of planning involved in the whole process, but was it just a taste preference sort of thing? Or is there some other purpose behind it?
What I found really remarkable was his ability to know when it would get cold enough during the fall/spring when daytime temperatures were above freezing. And also that he never seemed to forget where he put one, he must be pretty well organized lol.
