Considering an Alaskan Malamute - Could use some advice from folks with experience with the breed

So my wife has a friend who's trying to rehome her Alaskan Malamute puppy. My wife is very much in favor of the idea but I'm a little apprehensive. I'm curious if anyone who has any experience with the breed could offer me some advice. I've tried to do research online but am getting mixed signals based on certain things like crate training and how the breed is with cats.

Here's our current situation:

  • We have a decently large house. We also have 11 acres that is approximately 3/4 woods and a huge yard. Neighbors are few and far between. We live in the very most southern tip of Illinois.

  • My parents are currently staying with us while their house is being built and should be out in a few months. They have a small Malchi dog.

  • My wife and I also own a housecat.

  • My wife and I both work from 5am to 3pm every day. We work together at the same office so we get home at the same time in the afternoon.

  • My wife would like to crate the dog during the day when nobody is home and let it out in the afternoon as soon as we get home to play and exercise outside, go on walks, go hiking or go fishing with us. Then allow the dog to be out of his cate during the night and crate him before we leave in the morning.

My concerns are: is southern Illinois an ok climate for a Malamute if groomed properly? If brought in early as a puppy, would he be able to get along with the cat and my parents little dog before they move? Is crate training an ok option for them?

My wife and I are both really wanting a dog of our own and she's really wanting this puppy. I'm just trying to figure out if it will be a good fit not only for us, but for the dog. The last thing I'd want to do is bring it into an environment where it would be bad for the animal.

Thanks for any and all help everyone
