Happy NYE, everyone! Because of the holiday, a couple of my partner’s friends are coming to visit, and are bringing their dog with them due to the fact that they couldn’t find/couldn’t afford a sitter (I’m not exactly sure). The dog is an older mini Schnauzer who, according to my partner, has lived with cats for a long time, and is overall submissive, never having problems with his feline roommates.
My partner and I have two cats in our home, both adopted from shelters, with no experience living or being around dogs (to our knowledge. They may have lived with dogs in the past, we’re not sure).
One of the cats (Tater) is a new addition that we just adopted about a week ago, and he’s very playful, but quite skittish to unfamiliar noises and things in general (not sure if that’s because of the new environment and/or his personality). Our other cat (Cheese), who we’ve had for a couple of years, is pretty fearless and takes things in stride. She also used to rub up and roll around with my old work clothes when I worked in a doggy daycare, and is very adamant about getting to dogs that she sees outside the window, so she doesn’t seem very put off by dogs in general.
My question is what’s the best way to handle this introduction? If the animals are fine together, I’d prefer that the visiting dog not spend all of his time in a crate. Of course, if the animals can’t coexist safely, we’ll find another way to house the pup safely. Thanks in advance for any advice!
