Hey guys, sorry for the not so cheerful post. So my beautiful 7 month old kitten unfortunately passed away very suddenly 2 weeks ago and I’m wrecking my mind to figure out what caused it. She was a very healthy, beautiful girl who had never had previous problems in her short life. She went into her first heat 3 weeks before this, when she came out she was extra lovey and attached to me, I also noticed she was sleeping at night longer than usual which I thought was funny. An exact week before the incident while sleeping in bed with me she peed herself, not purposefully, while she was asleep urine leaked out of her. I panicked and called our vet the next day, he told me her behavior with the sleepiness and love was normal for her coming out of heat, and the urine was not too much of a concern unless it happens again (and in that case take her in, she probably has a UTI). He told me to clean her box out well and maybe that it was just too full and she held her urine. I never noticed another accident. Fast forward to the day of, I took her in at 8 AM to be spayed, I noticed 2 days prior a little blood in her ear (and assumed it was from ear mites, that’s how we found them last time). She was a completely normal happy kitten the night before, ate a ton, was playing all over the house. I got a call 30 minutes later from our vet that when he started to examine her her noticed she was covered in bruises, all in her ears, her mouth, and all over her body. He ran her CBC and found out her platelets were very low, we are talking at 30 and suppose to be above 300. He immediately became worried and assumed she got into rat poison, he said he sees this a few times a year and everytime it’s poison. The thing is we have no poison in our home, or blood thinners. She’s an indoor cat and has never been around other cats. She’s also fully vaccinated. He tested her with vitamin K injections and by the time I picked her up she was bleeding from her ears and we had to rush her to the state animal hospital. The vet there ran her CBC again and her platelets went from 30 to 15 in less than 30 hours, she was not severely anemic, and her bone marrow had stopped producing cells. Our poor sweet girl passed away that night due to her anemia and bleeding. We are a WRECK. Our vet knows it’s not FELV or FIV, he said it wasn’t poison, or metal or hormone toxicity. He said Panleukopenia was extremely unlikely, being that she was vaccinated, indoor, and not around other cats (also she had no symptoms of Panleukopenia). He believed she may have had an autoimmune disease passed on by her mother through birth, or a type of cancer. Does anyone know any illnesses that may have caused this? We are so at a loss and blaming ourselves so much. She was our entire world, we adored her so so much. This is honestly our worst nightmare come true, and narrowing down what happened would mean the world to us. Thank you!
