cw: death of a parent
My mom suddenly passed away a few days ago and I am now more or less entirely in charge of looking after her dog, Piper. I have plenty of experience with petsitting but I have never been a full-time pet owner with full responsibility for things like stocking up on pet food or arranging vet visits before.
On top of all that, Piper had a very strong bond with my mom. She was Mom's baby and would constantly cuddle up with her and follow her around the house like a furry little shadow. I've always joked about how Piper likes me enough that I'm a passable substitute for whenever Mom was at work or out of town. Unfortunately, Piper has always had a tendency to mope when Mom wasn't around, even if she was just talking to the neighbors outside. I don't know what I'm going to do when time passes and Piper realizes that Mom isn't coming back.
I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me on this matter. Piper is starting to get up there in age, but I'm pretty sure she has at least a few good years left and I owe it to Mom to make them the best years I possibly can before they meet again.
