2 weeks ago me and my gf adopted a cat (6M) from the local humane society. The cat had been there for a month. They told us that someone actually did adopt the cat during that time, but returned them after 1 week because the cat had a dental issue the owner didn't want to deal with. They said the cat had 1 decayed tooth that needed pulling. We loved him, and decided to adopt him and deal with the issue. 1 tooth, can't be too bad? right?
So we took him to our Vet and she said it actually seemed like it was 2 teeth that needed to be pulled, since the decay spread to the adjacent tooth (premolar and molar). We said okay, do the surgery. The cost was projected to be around 700.
During surgery, the vet calls us and says that ALL his lower incisors (6 teeth) are completely decayed and inflamed, and should be pulled as well. He's under anesthesia and it was a huge hassle to take off work to take him to the vet, and be available to pick him up, so we just said do whatever needs to be done. Removing 8 teeth instead of the 1 originally stated by the HS ended up almost doubling the cost of the procedure.
My main issue here is how misleading the humane society was. They said 1 tooth. Im posting here to complain, but also ask if we have any real options for getting the humane society to take responsibility for this. This is in Maryland, by the way.
