Hello, Pet Reddit! First time posting here and I need to ask for some advice.
Over the past year, I have been fostering dogs since I am not really in a place in life where I can care for a dog permanently. All of the dogs that I have had so far are usually well-behaved and potty trained. I've had pretty ok experiences until my last dog....
This dog is an adorable cocker spaniel who came from a puppy mill, where he was severely beaten when Animal Control found him about a month ago. We are trying to crate train him, which has went pretty ok, I suppose. He was terrified of people at first, but over the past 3 days has been coming out of the Kennel and coming up to me and my roommate. I've noticed that he is slowly becoming pretty cuddly with me.
Unfortunately, there are 4 problems that have become immediately apparent, and I welcome any and all advice for solutions.
- Potty training has been extremely difficult. Due to his upbringing, he will piss openly whenever and wherever he is at without any warning. Laying Down? Piss and lay in it. Walking around? Piss while walking. I have gotten him to go outside, but it takes quite a bit of time and is honestly more random than anything (See also, problem 3). Any advice to stop this and best piss-smell removal from a couch is greatly appreciated.
- While he has warmed up to me and one of my roommates, the other 2 cause him to growl and, you guessed it, immediately piss himself wherever he is. They are home much less frequently (though we will probably see more of them with the new work from home guidance from the government). His Kennel is in the living room, as I want him to have a decent amount of people exposure so he can get used to people for when we start showing him to potential adoptors.
- While I have a fenced in back yard, the shed in the corner has a 1 foot gap on two sides. He loves to get scared and run behind it, and it's a bitch to get back there to get him out. I've tried putting stuff up to block him, but he blasts right through it. Any advice on how to keep him to one spot? I've tried a leash, but he will not go to the bathroom when he is on a leash for any reason.
- He was fixed the day that we got him, so I can't bathe him. Unfortunately, he smells like complete and total death because of the peeing issues. Any advice on how I can majorly "spot clean" him for the next 5 days until I can just give him a full bath? I can't seem to get ahold of the vet and am tired of smelling him.
Fostering is definitely rewarding, but this dog is going to be the death of me. I appreciate any and all advice; thanks in advance.
