Calming treats for cats?

So I have a kitty that isn't a fan of visitors. One time I had the sink in my apartment serviced while I was at work and she stayed under the bed until I got home several hours later, and she didn't come out, she had to be coaxed out.

Well now my landlord has notified us all that inspections are coming up, and I want to prepare kitty for this best as I can. Based on my experience with the guy who replaced the windows on my porch I know she does better when I'm around and with a Feliway diffuser going.

Good news is that I actually will be home for the inspection, however I'm wondering if there's a less expensive option than a diffuser refill, and that's what got me thinking about calming treats. I've seen 'em at my local pet shop, and I'm wondering if anyone knows how well they work? Also how long do they last (if you can tell)? I know they say to feed your cat the treats at least 20 minutes in advance, but how long does the effect last? I kinda don't want to be giving my cat treats at 10a, when the inspections are scheduled to start, only for him to show up at 2p and the treats having worn off.

I'm probably over-thinking this, since inspections tend to be brief (but loud), but after this cat's bout with hepatic lipidosis when I first adopted her, well, I'm playing it safer than sorry.
