My dog doesn’t like other animals. He loves people but only likes one other dog, the dog he was raised with. Whenever we come across strangers and their pets walking down the street, he becomes aggressive/excited. He’s a mix, but he has some pit bull features. He’s a big, powerful, and athletic animal. He’s about 90lbs, and o my a little tubby. He has never actually attacked another dog or person, but he looks like he would, if that makes sense. I’ve tried for the last 10 years to figure out if he’s aggressive or just really excited. He’s so strong, Ive never taken a chance with it, and he’s poorly socialized because of that risk. We’ve learned to walk around other pets at a safe distance, or switch sides of the street.
Right now, the cat and dog are separated by a baby gate. We’re rewarding the dog with treats when he has good behavior at the gate, then building up from there. We’re letting them get a feel for each other right now. I hope one day we can feel ok taking the gate down and letting them sniff it out or whatever. The dog has that same “is he being aggressive or is he excited” energy. I can’t tell if he has aggressive tendencies, or if I have misinterpreted his behavior and manifested what I think is aggression.
Should I be concerned that he has some untapped killer instinct for other dogs, cats, small animals? What has worked for others in a similar position?
