Help please: first-time cat parents, allergies?

My husband and I just adopted a very shy cat three days ago. He didn't "show" well because he is so introverted and for sure was stressed in that environment. We'd been contemplating adopting a cat; we've always been dog people but aren't really able to support a dog with our unpredictable work schedules. Despite being in the shelter for weeks, he's come out of his shell a bit and is extremely affectionate/cuddly. He's perfect for first-time cat owners like us, as my friend suggested, but easily passed over by those who want a playful kitten.

Here's the issue: both my husband and I have been suffering some mild allergy symptoms that are progressively getting worse. I've been on allergy meds for three days and they're holding reasonably steady. It's spring where I live, but being outside of the house seems to improve my symptoms. I've got an appointment with an allergist. Has anyone here had a cat they've been allergic to and successfully dealt with those allergies with shots/meds?

This poor boy won't do well in a shelter/rescue so we're not taking him back. We'd like to make it work. Worst-case, we'll turn into a foster until we find the right fit for this shy little boy. Any advice about allergies is much appreciated.
