I have 2 dogs. One of them is a bit older and generally well behaved. The other is about 2 years old and a bit more mischievous. Her baseline behavior is playful, but she can be mischievous. Things like trying to steal food or getting into the trash if not closely supervised.
Here's the bigger problem. We've had her for about a year (?) now. She's had moments of aggression a total of 2 times in that time. She and our other dog will play fine and share toys, food, whatever. But both these times have been the older dog trying to play with a toy or get food that she wants. It's like they'll be hanging out fine and she just snaps and fights him. It's hard to get a pattern when it's only happened twice, but that's what it seems like. The first time she actually bit him, but the second she didn't. It happens so fast it's hard to even tell what's happened, but she seems to just flip and it's all loud angry snarling and teeth. She's never done it with another dog, even at dog parks and walks and stuff like that. And it's so rare it's hard to tell when or why she did. The first time was shortly after we got her home, and I thought it was an adjustment, and when it didn't happen again I thought it was resolved. But the second was recently so I have no idea what spurred this episode after getting along just fine. I have no way to tell when or why she'd react like that. I thought it was a one time incident but apparently not.
I know we need help. I'm afraid she'll hurt someone. We're expecting a baby soon, and I'm worried sick about a baby trying to take a toy from her. But I'm also selfishly worried that I'll lose my dog, either having to give her up or her getting put down after being violent.
Where do I start? The vet? Private training? Group training? Are places like PetSmart or Petco good? How do you train a dog who does something bad, but rarely?
Thanks for any help you can offer. I want to do right by my dogs and I feel like I'm doing everything wrong.
