This will be long, I'm on mobile, my apologies.
Today I came home from work to find my 4½ month old kitten, Ruby, gone. I live next to a highway, in a farming community in Australia. Snakes are out, dogs run loose, farmers generally shoot cats because they don't like them and assume feral without checking a lot of the time. I freaked out pretty hard when I saw my little girl was gone.
I frantically searched everywhere and couldn't find her, but I found her escape point. A window with no glass, that has wire mesh stuff over it and screwed into place, somehow, out of her reach, the wire has been taken off the screw. I've noticed there's a cat lurking in the area (I live a good 500m-1km away from my nearest neighbours). I suspect it's a tomcat too. I got a look at it the other day by chance as it ran off from the shed, and I've seen it's paw prints and slide marks in the dirt on my car. I suspect the tom may have been able to get on the window ledge and help rip the wire off, my housemate thinks she just pushed her way out. Ruby has just gone into her first heat (shock for me so early), this is another reason I think it's a tomcat lurking.
Either way, when I left to go door knock the neighbours, my housemate came home 10 minutes later and found Ruby sitting near the door waiting to come inside. She's safe and sound now. I worked out she could have been gone for up to 4 hours. I was going to get her spayed once she came off heat (originally when she hit 5 months old) but she may be now pregnant.
I'm in a tight spot money wise, my housemate says wait til she comes off heat and get her spayed cause she may not be pregnant. I think get her spayed asap because if she is pregnant, I can't afford kittens and I don't want to add anymore to this world. Also, she'll go into heat again soon after she has kittens. It's $220 normal price, $268 for on heat and $310 or so for early pregnancy spaying. Would it be a good idea to wait and see if she's pregnant or just get her done in a few days?
