TL;DR My indoor cat slipped outside, came back with a wound, hours later vet tells me she has been shot. Still don’t know how her surgery has gone, or is going.
First up, we live in Australia.
My youngest cat has always been very keen to be outside, but not adamant. She tries to get out through the front door when we enter and leave. But she’s not really forced the issue, just an opportunist.
Her first outing was a few months ago when my MIL stood in the doorway. I cried all night because I couldn’t get her back. Cat was waiting for us by the back door in the morning.
She’s been outside 4-ish times since then. She’s been less skittish and comes when called but doesn’t want to come inside. Today she got out when I was bringing the shopping in, I thought to let it go and let her come back in her own time. She was outside MAYBE 30 minutes before she meowed at the door. I opened it and gave her the usual “well look what the cat dragged in” (yeah, i know, I think I’m funny...) She was limping and immediately laid down, panting.
What.
She got up and moved about a meter away and laid down again, a small pool of blood where she had been.
What. The. Heck.
I isolated her with food (we have a baby, don’t want blood on carpet, or other cat to get infected in case spat with a local feral) and called a vet that’s open on a Saturday. They said to come in and they’ll make sure she’s okay.
Vet checked her and said that she wasn’t hit by a car (didn’t cross my mind, I’m still thinking other cat or she fell on something like the clumsy thing she is), so we waited for an available appointment.
Skipping some details but vet couldn’t tell if she broke her leg or not. Just one wound visible on her side near her leg, but nothing they thought to warrant a limp, so wanted to do X-ray and clean wound before stitching her up. I agreed and left her with them as they were busy and they said they’d call later when she’s in recovery to pick up.
I get the call. Only it was not to pick her up.
I was informed that the X-ray showed she had not broken her leg (phew!) but, what they did find was an unusual foreign object. They’ve told me that it looks suspiciously like a projectile from a BB gun. They needed permission to go further in surgery in attempt to remove it. I’ve said absolutely do that.
That phone call was 3 hours ago (dropped her off at 1.40, got the call at 5, it’s now 8.40) and I’ve not heard anything since. I cannot contact them (their clinic is closed) but was told they’d call me when pick up time.
I can’t believe it. We have local ferals , why the hell would someone shoot to harm MY VERY FRIENDLY, SOCIAL CAT!?!?! Is this a thing that’s been going on in my neighbourhood for a long time? Which one of my neighbors thinks this is an okay thing to do? I just. I just can’t.
This surgery is going to put me out nearly $2000! I was saving that and now it’s gone. But worse still is that my pure, innocent doofus of a cat has been attacked by some .... person. I have nothing nice to say about whoever has done this! The only justification I will accept is if they saw her attempt to kill an animal (she’s never hunted before so I don’t know her instinct in that way. She’s always left my chickens alone though). But even then.
