No idea if this is really the place to ask, I'm sorry, but I didn't see any rule against it.
As a big fan of rodents, I recently adopted two female mice. (I know two is not much :/) The thing is, their cage is way bigger than what I'm used to, so I can't place it somewhere high or out of my bedroom, and my cat is used to sleeping with me but well... he keeps trying to eat them. He's crying because he wants to get in my room.
Their cage is an aquarium (terrarium?) with a wire mesh lid. If I cover their cage at night with a towel, will it stop my cat from wanting to eat them? I know the smell is important too, but my cat seems to not care about them until one of them gets out of their little house. Should I also make a big hole in the towel where the lid is, to make sure they don't suffocate? Or is it useless and I should just stop letting my cat in my room? It wouldn't be the end of the world, but I just want to think about other ways before having to do this.
