Single and will be at work,is it safe for me to adopt a cat or a dog? I really would love to care for someone other than myself!

When I mean safe,I obviously mean for the future pet I might adopt as I will be out of the house for 8 hours a day during the weekdays. Does it make sense to adopt a grown animal or should I adopt a kitten or a puppy? Should I abandon the idea? Single pet owners please advice me!
