So, my elderly cat is starting to struggle…

I have a wonderful elderly boi who is approximately 18. Until now he has refused to let his age show. Still plays, runs around, jumps on everything (sigh), and all around been healthy. But recently he became really wobbly. Stumbles a lot, falls over if he shakes his head, fell off my bed once. Of course, I took him to the vet right away but on physical examination he is still remarkably healthy for his age and the labs came back almost normal. The vet thinks inflammation from his arthritis may be putting pressure on his nerves and causing the unsteadiness.

So, I’ve found myself in a bit of a conundrum. He can still jump and hasn’t lost any strength. He just loses balance really easily. I’m getting pressure from my family to buy him things like steps for my bed and sofa. But I’m not so sure. I don’t want to make his life too easy. As someone with physical problems myself, including arthritis, I know the importance of staying active. But there comes a point where its too painful / hard and accommodations need to be made. Unfortunately, he is a cat. I can’t ask him.

Not to mention those steps are bloody expensive and I’m a college student.

With these things in mind what do you guys think? Plus, do you have any tips or tricks for helping to keep my elderly boi comfortable / safe (him falling off things is a serious worry for me atm)?

For context: I live in a small apartment so things like him falling down a staircase isn’t a concern (thank goodness).
