My husband and I adopted a cat that had been abandoned on a farm, we picked him up in December and went through all the steps to getting him healthy. The vet estimates that he is a young adult ~2 years old, but it hadn't seemed like he had been treated before - we got him all his shots and neutered, etc. Later we realized he has a bad case of roundworms and we're currently halfway through the treatments.
The issue is, this cat is super wild. He is extremely friendly and loving, always purring and running up to greet you at the door, but when he plays, he plays extremely rough. My husband and I are covered in bites and scratches deep enough to draw blood. We have many toys for him and we're actually home most of the day due to teleworking contracts, but it seems no matter how much we play with the cat, he never runs out of energy and he always decides he would prefer to go for hands, ankles, thighs instead. Note that it does seem like he is being playful/attention seeking when he gets us; he is not hissing or spitting or poofing up.
I grew up with cats in my family home and I've never experienced this temperament before and I have to assume that before he was abandoned, he must have been neglected or mostly wild. Given the fact that he is an adult cat, is there any chance we could train some of the aggression out of him or is it too late? I really would prefer not to give him away, since he's clearly already been through so much, but I also can't be treating bites and scratches almost every day in my own home. We can't even have guests over, as I'm afraid he will go after them.
Any advice?
