Sadly, most pets besides dogs and cats are still seen as niche. Many people will think oddly of you if you own rats, ferrets, or snakes.
In my opinion, pigeons are the ideal pet bird. Everyone prefers cockatiels or budgies when we already have perfectly domesticated birds available: pigeons. They're cute, large enough to pet, make adorable noises, don't fly much, and can wear pants (for those who are afraid of droppings all over the house). No one likes pigeons, though. You can keep a macaw in your house just fine but keep a pigeon and suddenly you're weird. Pigeons are kept outside, not indoors, and even then pigeons are not particularly liked.
