We had new neighbours move in a couple of years ago, shortly after they adopted barn cats from a relative and had them as indoor/outdoor cats. Two of the cats slowly became interested in us and started visiting, (sadly all the others have since gone missing or passed away), and I’m a sucker so I picked up some cat treats. I felt like I was always giving them too many treats (but again I’m a sucker and can’t say no) so I started picking up actual food so I wasn’t throwing off their nutrients. They still spent most of their time at home, coming over mostly while the neighbours were at work for a snack and some attention. This is when the trouble started. The older female cat noticed me through a window one day and ever since has clawed at the screen whenever she want snacks, or just inside for a nap. She eventually taught her younger brother to do this too. I ended up taking the mesh screen out because they were tearing it apart, but that just led to them letting themselves in whenever the window is open. It’s gotten to the point that the female is here more often than not, including overnights, usually following me around the house or napping beside me. I think a big part of why she likes it over here is because her younger brother harasses her so much, and it’s usually pretty quiet which suits her personality. Don’t get me wrong, I love these cats to death, and I enjoy their company more than anything in this world, but I feel like I’ve stolen my neighbours cat! My neighbours don’t seem to mind too much, and we’ve talked about it, but I’d love to have them go home at night rather than finding them on my couch at 2am lol. I’ve tried keeping the window closed (much to my dismay, as it gets way too hot inside), if I find them I put them outside in the evening so my neighbours can call for them, and even tried withholding food (but again, I’m a sucker, and worry about them being hungry).
TLDR; I was mind controlled by my neighbours cats into giving them love and food and playtime whenever they want, but I feel like I’ve stolen one of my neighbours cats and I feel terrible about it. They don’t mind but I’d like them to go home every night, at the very least, for everyones sake, suggestions?
