My friend's job occasionally has cats that fall into the walls at work. She had the chance to adopt one this time and took it but, unfortunately, two of the people she lives with turned out to be allergic to cats and since she was attached she asked if I could take him in. I've been wanting a cat for years but never had the chance to adopt so I figured it was now or never and said yes. I just need some advice on how to care for him since not only is he the first pet I owned that's my responsibility but this is also the first time I've dealt with a kitten (My family's only ever owned dogs/puppies and typically my parents are the ones that cared for them)
He's four weeks old, and we took him to the vet the day she brought him home (He was dehydrated and had some bugs in his ears that were taken care of but he's healthy!!) He's been able to adjust really well and is super friendly! We've got him on a slurry mix of formula/ soft food and I've been slowly introducing water into his diet. I've read that feeding him every 4-6 hrs is advised and have been doing so (Even at night, I even set up an alarm that was useless since he woke me up at 4 AM to play anyway.)
I plan on actively playing with him around 2 hrs a day (In intervals, or just whenever hes feeling playful) and when I'm not playing with him I'll probably be hovering around since he's just a kitten (Ill gradually stop that as he gets older and less likely to get into trouble) We have a cage for him but I don't plan on keeping him in it unless there's no one home to watch him or when it's night time. Sometimes when he's napping I'll either have him sleeping on me (He really enjoys sleeping on peoples chests) or I'll have one of my shirts so he can sleep with that.
He's been really good about going to the bathroom in his litter box, which may be because I put him in it after every meal/nap (He's too small to get over the lip so I still have to place him in it) he does the digging thing and there have been no accidents yet!
Honestly he's been really well behaved and if I didn't know any better I would say that before the whole wall incident he was owned by someone, but that does not seem possible. I know I'm probably being an over worrying cat mom but I want to make sure he's OK. Is there any advice I can get? Should I back off? I'm worried that when I go to work he'll get separation anxiety (But since there are others in the house I think he'll be good.) and that I'll be a bad parent.
Edit: Forgot TL;DR, first time kitten owner to a stray kitten that's surprisingly well behaved. Advice welcomed!
