Diatomaceous earth... On your mattress? (First time DE user)

Hey there fellow pet owners!

I moved to the South just under a year ago. I've never had to battle fleas like this before! I foster animals so I'm pretty vigilant with vacuuming and preventative treatments and haven't had an issue until this week.

I think I had a bite or two on my legs earlier in the week, but I didn't really notice them. This morning I woke up with bites all over my legs. There's a possibility it could be from some outdoor work I did yesterday, but I'm thinking it's more likely that the pets brought some fleas in. I've noticed a little scratching lately on both of them.

I'm buying DE and will treat the floors and yard, but what are your thoughts on furniture? I don't have a lot of fabric in the house (asthma and allergies) so there's really only two items - the bed and the couch.

1. Has anyone else treated their mattress? I'd let it set overnight and sleep in another room before vacuuming.

2. Also, I read that another redditor let theirs sit on the floor for a few days. Has anyone else done this? Did you let your animals in during that time?

3. Yes I know to buy food grade. Done and done.

It would be nice to do the whole house in one fell swoop, but I'll do it room by room if it's safer that way.
