How to Clip a Dog’s Nails?

Hi all! The pup I’m helping take care of is getting some very scratchy nails :( We were due to go get him clipped and have his teeth cleaned in May, but that looks like it’s not going to happen now that quarantine has happened.

To be quite honest, this dog is a NIGHTMARE when it comes to anything hygiene related. Bath? Nope, not having it! Teeth cleaning? Never HEARD of such a thing. Nail clipping? Hm, I am going to scream like I Am Dying. I love him to bits, but whenever WE try to clip his nails, he screams and cries and growls! We just don’t know what to do, and his back claw is getting longer and longer and curling, and that really worries me :( He’s so fidgety that we can only get, what, maybe ONE nail done every 20-30 minutes?

I just don’t want his nails to continue to curl and cause him pain or break and become sharp. How can I get his nails shorter or adjust him to the clippers? He is a jack russel/dachsund mix, estimated 6 years old next month and 6-7 lbs. I know it seems silly to not be able to clip a 7 lb dog’s nails, but I’m more worried about the hurt we MIGHT cause him in his frantic state :(
