My cat is an extremely friendly and affectionate one. Sometimes lately I have hugged him while he is resting/napping. I put one arm underneath his body (usually offering my hand as a sort of pillow which he usually accepts), then the other arm I put over his body but I do not lean any actual weight on him of course, the other arm is just brushing up against him. Imagine how somebody would hold a teddy bear while sleeping and that’s kinda what we do except I don’t “squeeze”.
He usually purrs softly or loudly during this; sometimes he makes no noise. I always leave my arms loose enough that he could easily “escape”. Sometimes he yawns or slightly adjusts his position but he doesn’t usually leave my embrace (Actually usually I am the one who gets bored of hugging first haha).
Most nights he comes to lie down right next to me before going to sleep. Some nights he chooses to sleep in another spot (linen closet and even the bath mat have appealed to him in the past). But usually if I lie down he lies down next to me.
I thought this all was fine, but I read a lot online that basically said cats’ instincts are to dislike being hugged because it makes them feel like prey. And that the cat may stay still out of fear (like a deer in headlights). , And the purring may be the cat calming himself if he is nervous. Now I’m worried I’ve been making my cat stressed during what I thought was a nice relaxing moment. Does my cat just have Stockholm syndrome about me seeing as he is dependent on me for food and shelter.
How can I tell if my cat is comfortable or not?
