Kitten isn’t consistently going to its litter unless he’s physically placed there

Hi there,

First time cat owner. We bought a kitten that we found online at 8 weeks old and we were told he’s potty trained. Well it turns out he isn’t exactly potty trained.

He gives a certain meow when he needs to go, and unless we physically place him in the litter, he will go potty on the carpet or wherever he is at the time. He’s had several accidents already because we are not always around to put him in his litter. The litter is in an accessible spot and presumably he should know where it is since he’s been going there for several days. He sometimes gets it right and goes, but sometimes he doesn’t and just goes wherever. It’s confusing.

Additionally, he will not go eat or drink if he’s hungry. He always has some dry food available and fresh water, but unless we place him in front of it, he won’t eat. Again, it’s in an accessible spot, he can see it from where he usually is. We do it in regular intervals and we open wet food too but he just doesn’t eat or poo properly unless we intervene.

Is there something wrong or how can we manage this?

Thanks in advance!
