I've had my three-legged cat since July of last year, and not once has he ever meowed the way he has been doing the last two days. For context, I just moved into my new apartment less than two weeks ago and he's been on long road trips with me and has never acted strange while we stayed in hotels, either.
Yesterday he spent the majority of his time hidden under my bed, but I thought nothing of it since my boyfriend came over and that's what he usually does whenever someone is in the house.
At night, he always comes and lays down with us to get petted but this time, he didn't, and I woke up in the morning to him meowing as if he were getting into a cat fight. He was beside my bed, yowling and facing the door to the living room. I have no other pets and there was nobody in the living room. He ran back under my bed and stayed there.
My boyfriend and I got up, checked up on him and checked everything around the house, then got up and left to the store for groceries. When we got back, he was sitting on his favorite chair in the living room and was completely normal again, meowing at us normally and asking to be petted.
Suddenly, this morning, I got up to use the restroom and he came into the bathroom with me, which isn't abnormal either, so I picked him up and brought him back to bed with me. After five minutes of him relaxing and sleeping in the bed, he suddenly shot his head up, jumped off the bed, ran underneath the bed, and then began to yowl once again. It's dark in here, but it was as if he'd seen a ghost! Even my laptop screen turned on while he was yowling and I found that to be strange haha.
I looked under the bed and he seemed distress staring into the living room, and then calmed down as soon as he saw me, but hasn't gotten out from underneath the bed yet. I just checked on him again and he was asleep down there.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? Should I take him to the vet for an underlying health concern? What could cause a cat to suddenly begin to yowl?
