my mom found our female maltese poodle (15 yrs) eating some fertilizer from one of our house plants about 2 days ago. (the night before yesterday, just to be more specific)
shortly after she had eaten it, she looked like she was going to throw up but didn't puke at all in the end. instead, we found her bed soaked with poop and pee late at night. a lot more than what she normally lets out.
yesterday, i noticed she hasn't been able to walk properly. her balance was wonky at times and i'd occasionally catch her from falling. she's also been prone to walking towards tight spaces or near walls. though, i do understand that she's old and it might just be her eyesight. it's been getting harder to feed her and i don't know if she's just being picky like usual or if it's something deeper. (her teeth aren't very strong enough to chew normal dog food so we've been feeding her any soft dog-safe foods/wet dog food for awhile now.) the morning after the incident, she ate her normal portion of wet food. but refused to eat it again later on in the day. i spent most of today showing her all kinds of foods that she might pique her interest but she just keeps turning her head away. she has been drinking plenty of water, though.
i'm really scared. i've had this dog by my side since i was 5 yrs old and i don't want to lose her like this. i told my mom that we need to find her a vet but she's worried that all they're going to say is that there isn't any hope and we'll have to put her down, especially since she's an old dog.
please, i need to know what's the right approach to handling this situation. i've been making myself paranoid searching up what to do and i know better than to self-diagnose my pets.
